In my opinion as nice as Millennium park is it really doesn’t need a Frank Gehry, at this point I’ve seen as many of these twisted metal things in every big city I go to as I ever need to. Of course most people I’m sure would be quick to disagree with me on this, none the less I would have like to seen a lesser known and more creative architect handle this project.

Pulled out the Hasselblad cameras and some film of all things to continue an old project I started years ago. The goal was to take an interesting perspective on Chicago after dark. The city as been photographed so many times it’s so difficult to make anything look different. I thought i’d finished this project years ago with about 100 final images but since the city has changed so much it seems like a good time to take one final crack at this and give the project a little update. I’m looking to post more images this late summer and autumn as I try to cover the locations before its to cold to stand around at night for hours on end. With the current weather that may be in about a week, but I really hope not!

Carnival ride early morning spring 1998, Lincoln Square, Chicago IL. USA

Well here goes nothing. It’s now taken me at least three weeks to make my first post on here. I keep thinking I really need something interesting to say or maybe a really captivating image to start off with….really grab some bodies attention, so instead of waiting for that to happen which could easily be timed in years not days i’ve opted to simply start. A few words into this and I’m thinking already I hope this blog-a-ma-gig checks my spelling because wow it’s just plan bad, and the grammar’s not much better. I guess that’s what all those little red dotes under my writing are telling me, i’d be hard pressed to pass a high school English class now. Well moving on from talking about nothing i’ll talk about something, About this image, these colorful carnival rides. These images are at least 12 years old likely a few more since i’m not certain about the date. It brings back a few memories and makes me a bit sad actually realizing time passes so quickly, I never realize that as much as I do when looking back at an image and connect what life meant and was to me at the time I made that picture, it can be a flood of thoughts, images, memories, smells and more. It makes me both want to look and avoid looking at old pictures. I remember little about taking these pictures; got up early and walked around the neighborhood, not even sure what camera i had…likely an old twin lens Rolleiflex but i do remember the film in it was Agfa Ultra 50……a blast from the past….what a great film the colors just jumped off the page it made everything look a bit fantasy like or cartoonish almost. So my next statement should be “I really miss film”, but honestly I don’t, only now and again I miss it the way I miss that early morning 12 years ago when I took those pictures.

Big vacant lot!

Big vacant lot!

Two hours in a Jet Ranger helicopter with the the back windows down can get rather cold in the middle of December over Lake Michigan. All in all not a bad picture of a big vacant lot, the story runs in BusinessWeek Magazine in early 2008 and deals with real-estate in the Chicago area.

Chicago Shopping

Shot a nice shopping story in Chicago for Virtuoso Magazine. Not much to say about this one really, we had fun and my assistant spent about equal time shopping and assisting.

Classic Breakfast

Lou Mitchell's Restaurant

Spent a very early morning photographing at Lou Mitchell’s restaurant. It’s a Chicago icon as far as breakfast places go. The place is really great, lots of locals and lots of atmosphere to go along with them. It’s the kind of place where some of the waitresses have worked there since you were born. Try the omelets there to die for! The project was for South West Airlines Spirit magazine and will be out in a few months.
